Be more assertive – Learning from Richie McCaw

At the core of all communications there lies a precarious tightrope. Fall off said tightrope to one side, and plummet into a pit of passiveness. If you lose your balance and slip to the other side, you’ll be met by a red-hot stream of aggression. Maintaining a healthy balance will reward you with the achievement of assertiveness. It all sounds very much like every conversation we have takes place on a knife edge – but thankfully we’ve got a much nicer scenario to explain how you can be more assertive. The rugby world cup is still in full swing, and we’re continuing to make the most of the occasion...

Habitually Excellent – 3 Steps to becoming an effective person

Traditionally, when people aim to make positive changes in their lives they will throw themselves into guides such as “Become successful in 30 minutes!” Or “My secret to becoming an overnight millionaire!” But the long-term goals involved in such guides are perpetually vague and provide little in the way of short-term, moment to moment answers in your current role. That’s where being effective as a person can produce real results. At Quanta we wanted to write about this and saw a golden opportunity to make the following examples more relatable – the rugby world cup!

Taking a leaf from the All Blacks – Building a high performance team

A team is a team. It doesn’t matter much about what level said team is performing at – they all have the same needs that must be fulfilled to reach their purpose. A professional rugby team needs to put points on the opposition in the same way that any business needs to tear market share from its competitors. We bring up the rugby comparison not only due to the gloriously relevant timing of the rugby world cup, but also because of how intrinsically linked the two examples of high performing teams can be. However, there are (hopefully) less knocks to the head in your office than on the field. Here are some of our guidelines and other theories that can maximise team cohesion and overall performance!

Best practice vs real life

So there I am teaching an MSP class when one of my delegates asks, “do I need to disregard real life when I do the exam?” And that’s a dangerous question for those of us teaching any best practice framework. While technically the answer is “yes” – because it is the book and how it is applied to a given scenario that is tested, this can be dangerous. It can lead to people saying, “oh OK; then it has nothing of value to add to the workplace”.
