Those willing to invest the time to reflect on their approach to product development and ready to move beyond being a backlog monkey to a product visionary.

Purpose of the course

To expose you to various product management and entrepreneurial philosophies and have you apply them in a meaningful and reflective manner.

Prerequisites

Hold an Advanced Certified Product Owner (A-CSPO®) certification with the Scrum Alliance.

The Product Owner role is vital to the success of any agile team - yet substantially fewer Product Owner invest in their own development than their ScrumMaster counterparts. This course provides a forum for experienced Product Owners to both get to grips with new concepts and to reflect on their actions to date.

Product Owner Core Competencies

  • Appraise how different organisational designs and structures might impact how a person is selected to be a Product Owner.
  • Assess a facilitated session with stakeholders who are in conflict, providing two examples of how to improve facilitation.
  • Compare at least two techniques for gathering, communicating, and leveraging information from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Explain at least three reasons why the start of a new Scrum Team should be handled differently from a traditional project kick-off or charter.
  • Demonstrate the Product Owner’s responsibility to define expectations for quality when the team forms.
  • Plan the launch of a new Scrum Team.
  • Demonstrate at least two methods to support Product Backlog management across multiple teams. 
  • Contrast at least two patterns for scaling the Product Owner role. 
  • Organise and facilitate a collaborative session to perform prioritisation at scale.
  • Develop and teach a topic related to Product Ownership.

Implementing Purpose and Strategy 

  • Compare and contrast at least three business models for a product.
  • Develop a business model for a product idea.
  • Construct a competitive analysis.
  • Calculate the opportunity size of a product or feature. 
  • Compare at least two techniques to develop a product plan or forecast. Develop an appropriate release strategy for a business model. 
  • Describe at least three measurable product launch goals.
  • Discuss at least five elements of a product launch plan.
  • Apply at least two methods to determine the profitability of a product.
  • Calculate the expected outcome or economic results of a product release, given fixed and variable costs, and forecasted return.  
  • Explain an iterative and incremental investment model for product development.
  • Demonstrate at least three ways how return on investment can be improved. 
  • Calculate the cost of delay for a product feature. 
  • Compare at least two approaches to fund Agile product development.

Advanced Interactions with Customers and Users 

  • Prepare a plan to integrate customer development into product development. 
  • Evaluate at least three techniques for customer research or product discovery. 

Complex Product Assumption Validation

  • Select an appropriate experiment to test a hypothesis. 
  • Evaluate the results and impact of an experiment. 

Advanced Product Backlog Management

  • Assess how teams and/or organisations emphasise outcomes over output.
  • Select an appropriate value creation strategy for a product idea at a given point in its lifecycle.
  • Compare at least three techniques to inform Product Backlog ordering.
  • Defend the order of a Product Backlog with one or more stakeholders.
  • Analyse a team’s use of Product Backlog Refinement.
  • Propose at least two ways to improve engagement of customers or users to refine the Product Backlog.

Additional Exam Information

There is no formal exam associated with this training. Delegates attain CSP®-PO certification by:

  • Attending a certified CSP®-PO educational offering to gain advanced knowledge in implementing purpose and strategy, high level approaches for testing product assumptions and advanced techniques in Product Backlog management.

  • Successfully completing all educator-designed components of an approved educational offering. This may include pre- or post- course work as deemed necessary by your approved educator to complete the learning objectives.

  • Accepting the CSP®-PO License Agreement and completing your Scrum Alliance membership profile.

  • Validating at least 24 months of work experience specific to the role of Product Owner (from within the past five years).



NOTE: You may take the CSP®-PO educational offering at any time after completing your A- CSM certification, and must have at least 24 months of Scrum Master experience logged into your Scrum Alliance profile before you are eligible to receive your CSP®-PO certification.
