Who is this course for

This course is suitable for those who want to obtain the BCS Certificate in Business Analysis Practice and learn about the strategic side of business analysis. 

It is suitable for those currently working as Business Analysts and other professionals utilising Business Analysis skills as part of their current or future role.

Purpose of the course

This three day course gives candidates an understanding of the strategic side of business analysis and leaves them with the tools to develop business strategies and explore business-levels issues, both opportunities and problems.

You will learn how to


  • Describe how a business strategy is developed.

  • Use strategic analysis techniques.

  • Describe the need for project discipline.

  • Explain techniques to investigate an organisation's business systems.

  • Describe an approach to improving business systems.

  • Explain the importance of stakeholder management and use a stakeholder analysis technique.

  • Use techniques for the analysis and modelling of business systems.

  • Describe how recommendations for business improvement may be identified.

  • Describe the contents of a rigorous business case for the development and implementation of business changes.

  • Identify costs, benefits, impacts and risks for an option in a business case.

To support preparation for taking the exam we provide delegates with two sample exam papers during the course.


The BCS Certificate in Business Analysis Practice exam is taken after completion of the course.


The format of the examination is a one-hour closed-book multiple-choice examination consisting of 40 questions. Candidates need to achieve a minimum of 26 marks out of 40 to pass the examination.

Candidates who are awarded a pass for the examination are awarded the BCS Certificate in Business Analysis Practice.

Pre-Coursework

To help prepare for this course delegates will be supplied with some pre-reading. This will provide an overview of the syllabus for this module and explain some of the business analysis techniques within it in more detail. Pre-reading will take approximately 5-7 hours.

Delegates may also choose to read chapters 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9 of the BCS publication 'Business Analysis - Third Edition', but this is optional. The BCS reading text is not included in the course fee and delegates should obtain their own copy if they wish to complete the additional reading.
