Ex-military forces rejoice! Due to an improved employment rate for those who have left the military (8 out of 10, higher than current UK employment rates), the future looks brighter than it has ever been before for those seeking work post-service. Sadly, barriers will always remain between industries for anyone without recognised training qualifications. So, regardless of rank or title – are you making the most of your ELC’s?
Historically, all members of the armed forces were awarded £3,000 or £6,000 worth of enhanced learning credits upon exiting the UK military and were given ten years to spend it. This number has recently been cut dramatically to five years for those who left after the 31st of March 2016. They are released yearly in either £1,000 or £2,000 instalments (dependent on if you are eligible for the lower or higher amount). We would hate to call this new position a race against time but we don't want you to miss out on fully utilising these valuable ELC's. If you left the service in 2011 it is time to start thinking about using any unspent ELCs.
Can you spend it all?
Some surveys show 60% of employers in the UK would not even consider hiring an ex-forces member without appropriate training, the figure eludes to the importance of using your government-awarded Enhanced Learning Credits. These ELC’s are designed to mitigate some struggles when military personnel transition to a new phase in their working life with valuable qualifications. As many as 17% of respondents who had left the UK military rated the difficulty of finding a new profession as 10/10, so it’s easy to see how any available help would be appreciated: specifically, regarding subsequent career progression. Not only could career progression help financially, but it has also been linked to a reduction in mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, which is heavily documented as being a large-scale affliction for those in this line of work.
So, men and women of the armed forces, it’s a possibility that you are not aware of the uses (or extent thereof) for your ELC’s. While you can’t plant them in the ground and await the giant beanstalk, the investment in your future is (probably) worth more to you than any magic beans. Even the basic amount of £3,000 can afford an extensive combination of training courses that can elevate anyone’s prospects to new realms, however it’s possible that you could have as much as £6,000 worth of ELC's available. The newly imposed time restraints mean that the yearly spending limit on ELCs could become a struggle if the necessary time management strategies haven’t been put in place.
