LightSwitch is an interesting new development from Microsoft. It’s like a combination of Access, Frontpage, Visual Studio and more. It allows non-techie people to quickly create data-driven apps, then deploy them as a Windows app, a Web app or a Cloud app! In other words, the app can be hosted by a client PC, one of your own servers, or by a server somewhere in the cloud.

App Development, Microsoft change the rules

I've been using Microsoft MVC for a few years now, so I was, of course interested in the new MVC 3 (released early 2011).

And what a surprise - there's a whole new language called Razor!

I can still use traditional "code-behind" files (.aspx), but I'm being encouraged to use Razor instead.  At 1st glance, Razor looks a bit like Classic ASP, but in fact it's got more in common with Haml (or NHaml).

It's all about the money, money, money - or is it?

It's all about the price or is it??Maybe it is who we are engaging with at the moment.  Or maybe our sales team have learnt a new question to ask.  Maybe it is the way the world is now, after all Greece is still on the edge of imploding, if you would believe everything you read.  But I seem to be getting an increase number of tenders and proposal through for their varying clients.

Microsoft Windows Server 8 has arrived

Windows Server 8Microsoft Windows Server 8 has arrived, (well at least in Beta version) and the message from Microsoft is clear.  Its here to challenge VMware and Citrix for cloud hosting to supply services, data storage and applications for private organisations, and hosting providers.

Welcome to the Quanta Blog!

Quanta BlogIt is hard to know what to say in the first post such as this one.  Trying to come up with a witty and imaginative title has obviously failed.  So I think we will start with the why.  Why have we launched a blog?

From listening to what our customers say the one thing that stands out is the fact that people love the feel of Quanta, the quality of the whole experience.  From booking, through to arrival and Marion's warm welcome and then the trainers themselves.

Restoring a SharePoint library

We recently had a need to restore a SharePoint library from the backup, which was a great opportunity to try out the granular restore features of SharePoint 2010 for real.

The first challenge concerned the nature of our backup. We run a daily backup of the full farm but this didn't meet our current need - there was no way I was restoring the whole farm just to fix a developer's minor mishap and the farm backup does not provide an option to drill-down all the way to list and library level.
