Best practice vs real life

So there I am teaching an MSP class when one of my delegates asks, “do I need to disregard real life when I do the exam?” And that’s a dangerous question for those of us teaching any best practice framework. While technically the answer is “yes” – because it is the book and how it is applied to a given scenario that is tested, this can be dangerous. It can lead to people saying, “oh OK; then it has nothing of value to add to the workplace”.

The Pickle with Procurement

When I reach any section on procurement in one of my courses, I regularly ask the question “What is procurement?”. The answer I am often given is “buying stuff”! To programmes, we often need to procure something from an external company. The more complex the programme the more likely you will need external help or materials.

The power of a positive mind…

A number of us in the Midlands have seen this scenario with the roadworks on the M5 at Oldbury Viaduct (between Junctions 1 and 2). The project started in January 2017...

What’s in a name?

On a recent PRINCE® course of mine, one of my delegates asked me about the Project Plan. He wanted to know if this document was the same as the Blueprint document he used at his work. However as there is no such document as the Blueprint in PRINCE® he was unable to find the relevant document when trying to translate the terminology in his workplace to that in the method.
