There is no argument that one of the best ways to learn something is by practising.  You didn’t pass your theory driving test and expect to get behind the wheel and drive away.  If you were to attend a 5 day course on how to play tennis, you wouldn’t expect to get on court and be as good as Roger Federer. So neither should you expect to go on an IT Service Management or Project Management course and expect to be able to start implementing it straight away.

Unlike technical IT courses where you actually sit at a computer, learn how to do use it, break it and learn from these mistakes, you can’t do this with best practice methodology such as ITIL® or PRINCE2®. If only it was as easy as setting up a “test” company and playing until you get it right. Even if you could when adopting a best practice methodology there are a number of obstacles to overcome as well as knowing where to start with the actual implementation.
